The Ospreys have returned! In the snow!
It’s been a busy week on Rutland Water. The Ospreys have started to return back to the area and seem to have settled well despite being greeted with snow for the latter half of the week! Hopefully Spring is just around the corner now and Osprey season can really start.
There are many fantastic events and activities being planned by the Rutland Osprey Project team this summer which I have listed below. If you are planning to visit Rutland Water to see the Ospreys, why not stay at Puddle Cottage? The cottage is a 4 star self catering cottage located in the charming village of Edith Weston and is just a short walk to the South shore of Rutland Water. Guided Walks at Rutland Water Nature Reserve
Dawn Chorus (with breakfast) 5:30am – 8am £12.50
An early start will be rewarded by the sound of a memorable dawn chorus. We’ll also have time to visit the Osprey nest before returning to the visitor centre for a well-earned breakfast. Free binocular hire available on the day. Please meet at the Lyndon Visitor Centre at 5:30am. Breakfast will be provided after the walk. April 27th and May 4th.
Nightingale Walk (Evening) 6:30pm – 9:3pm £7.50
A walk to an area where we should hear these magical birds in full voice. There should be a range of other nocturnal wildlife to enjoy, including bats and owls. Please meet at Anglian Bird Watching Centre. May 1st, 3rd, 11th.
Nightingale Walk (Midnight) 11pm- 1am £12.50
At this time, where there are few other competing sounds, their melodic song can be heard at its very best.Please meet at Anglian Bird Watching Centre. May 10th
Osprey Cruises on the Rutland Belle
Wednesday Cruise
Meet 4:30pm at Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre, boat departs 5:45pm and returns approx. 7:30pm £18pp (£12 under 16’s). June 5th, July 10th, 17th, 24th, August 7th.
Saturday Cruise
Meet 3:45pm at Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre, boat departs 5pm, return approx. 6:45pm £18pp (£12 under 16’s). May 18th, 25th; June 15th, 29th; July 13th, 27th; August 10th, 24th
Sunrise Cruise (with breakfast)
Meet 6am at Whitwell Harbour return approx.7:30am £21pp (£15 under 16s). June 1st, July 6th, 20th, August 3rd.
Osprey Extravaganza
A day full of games, activities, crafts and guided walks for children and families at Rutland Water Nature Reserve (Lyndon). The event will run from 10am to 3pm with activities running all day. No need to pre-book, just turn up on the day. July 26th. £10 per family including reserve permit
