The Rutland Ospreys return!

The Rutland Ospreys return!

The Rutland Ospreys return! We were delighted to hear that the Ospreys have returned to Rutland Water!

Maya returned yesterday (12th March 2024)  – the second time she has arrived back on the 12th March. This makes this her joint earliest time back. We now eagerly await the return of her breeding partner, 33(11). We expect this to be anytime soon. Maya and male 33(11) have bred together since 2015 and have raised 20 chicks during that time.

If you wish to catch at glimpse of the Osprey you can view the Rutland Osprey webcam here.

Where can you see the Ospreys?

You can watch them at their nest site at Lyndon Nature Reserve. The Lydon site is less than 2 miles from the cottages.

Lyndon Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, this tranquil reserve spans over 100 acres of diverse habitats, including woodlands, meadows, and wetlands.

One of the main attractions of Lyndon Nature Reserve is its significance as a breeding site for Ospreys. Visitors flock to the reserve each year to witness these magnificent birds of prey nesting and raising their young. The reserve boasts several well-positioned hides and viewing points.

Apart from ospreys, Lyndon Nature Reserve is home to a wealth of biodiversity. Birdwatchers can spot a variety of species, including kingfishers, herons, and warblers, while the surrounding woodlands provide shelter for mammals such as deer and foxes. The reserve’s diverse flora also supports a multitude of insects and other invertebrates.
