Summer Stays at Rutland Water Holiday Cottages

Welcome to Puddle Cottage and Snowdrop Cottage, self catering holiday cottages near Rutland Water! We are in the midst of the busiest season for us but we have been blessed with a warm, sunny Summer and it has bee so fabulous to hear that so many guests have been enjoying the good weather too.

The lavender has been in full bloom at both cottages, and it has been lovely to decorate the cottages with seasonal flowers from the gardens. The smell of the David Austin roses, the lavender and rosemary was fabulous!

News from Rutland

Rutland Water was recently named the ONLY inland bathing water location in England to be awarded the Blue Flag Award, as well as being a Green Flag awarded site too! These awards from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy recognises excellent water quality, biodiversity and green space for the community that brings people together. Great news for the big puddle!

We recently made the most of the good weather and enjoyed a picnic on the shores of Rutland Water. Otters Deli in Oakham can provide fabulous picnic boxes.

Whilst it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the Aqua Park on the North Shore of Rutland Water at Whitwell is very popular. Keep your eye open for discount codes before you book! Its an energic session so an hour session should be enough time!

A more relaxing way to enjoy the water is to sail, and the  Rutland Water Sailing Club is based in Edith Weston, just down the lane from the cottages. You can hire boats, or arrange for an instructor to take you out on a sail.

And finally on the theme of enjoying the water, if you want a refreshing swim, there are open water swimming sessions held at Whitwell most Sundays until September, and in peak summer, also on Thursdays, You can book with Inspire 2 Tri here. You can hire wetsuits if booked in advance too.

For a special occasion, we enjoyed a birthday treat at The Olive Branch — the food and the service was excellent, and  we made the most of the weather by sitting in their Garden Gazebos (complete with heaters and blankets if needed) and dogs were also welcome.

A new restaurant, Fern, has opened at the Falcon Hotel in Uppingham which has been highly recommended  –  focused on small, seasonal plates washed down with organic wines. Also popular in Uppingham is No.23 and their £5 Lunchtime Pasta on a Thursday is a great deal. Bookings recommended & there is a small terrace to enjoy the good weather.

And finally, a book recommendation! Guests have highly recommended a new series of murder mystery books based in Stamford written by E.C. Bateman. We have popped copies in both cottages for you to also enjoy. You can buy the books at our wonderful independent book store, Walkers  who have shops in both Oakham and Stamford – but if you are not local they are also available on Amazon.

Now Booking for Summer 2026

Many of our guests book well in advance, and we have now opened our bookings up until the end of July 2026. We have recently moved to an online booking system, which allows payment by credit card which is often requested.

The dates for the Global Bird Fair have been announced as 10th to 12th July 2026. We are currently booked at Snowdrop Cottage but have availability at Puddle Cottage for that weekend.
